North Battleford’s Miguel Fenrich is helping young aspiring writers get the start they need.
Fenrich, who himself is a journalist, author, and poet, is also the owner and publisher of Supernova Press, northwest Saskatchewan’s leading fiction publishing company.
On Aug. 6, he will be hosting a workshop at the second annual Words of Wonder Festival at Manitou Waters, a naturopathic centre and healing arts centre at Manitou Lake, just an hour east of North Battleford.
The workshop is called: From Concept to Publication: Gen Z & Millennial Writers.
Fenrich said it’s important to encourage the next generation to pick up the pen, pencil, or keyboard and find their voice, writing.
“Really, it’s a workshop designed to teach emerging writers how to author a short story, a poem, [or] piece of fiction, during the course of the three-and-a-half hour workshop,” he said.
“I really wanted to start a workshop like this, not only because there isn’t a lot of support for emerging youth writers in Saskatchewan, but I wanted to do something that was focused on jump-starting a career for a budding author.”
Fenrich said his passion for offering a writing course for those just beginning to hone their craft became a passion soon after joining the publishing industry, as he noticed the need.
“Many [workshops] seem to be focused on people who already have a book published, or already know what they’re doing, so I really wanted to do a workshop for people that feel like beginners,” he said.
“It can feel really overwhelming to start, so it really gives young writers a chance to hone those skills into where they can continue to take steps to immerse themselves in the industry.”
Those interested in attending Fenrich’s Gen Z & Millennial Writers workshop are asked to RSVP prior to the end of July, allowing him to structure the program in the best way possible for those attending.
